India
Five thousand years of continuous civilisation, distilled into journeys that move at the pace of the places they pass through — royal deserts, slow waterways, ancient healing traditions, and everything between.
One word.
A thousand different countries.
No single journey can claim to show you India — and any company that promises otherwise has misunderstood the scale of what they are offering. India is not a destination in the way that other countries are destinations. It is a continent of distinct languages, cuisines, climates, architectures and ways of life, held together by a shared civilisational thread that stretches back further than almost anywhere else on earth.
What draws the discerning traveller back, again and again
India rewards travellers who go deep rather than wide. These are the qualities our guests describe most often — not as a checklist, but as a feeling that builds over the course of a journey and rarely leaves once it has arrived.
Living history
Forts, temples and cities that are not preserved as museums but inhabited, used and maintained by the communities who have always called them home. History here is not behind glass.
Extraordinary hospitality
From palace hotels where royal families once held court to family-run heritage homes, Indian hospitality carries a warmth and generosity that consistently surprises first-time visitors.
Landscape in extremes
Desert and rainforest, mountain and coastline, royal city and quiet village — often within the same week of travel. Few countries offer this range without sacrificing depth.
Wellness at its source
Ayurveda, yoga and meditation did not arrive in India — they originated here, and remain practised in their original form by those who inherited the knowledge directly.
The doors into India
Each of these is a complete journey in its own right — and each opens onto a very different India.
Experiences that define an India journey
However your journey is shaped, these are the moments that recur across our most memorable India itineraries — each one rooted in a specific region, each one entirely private.
Sunrise at a fort or temple, before the crowds
Whether at Amber Fort in Jaipur or a temple complex further south, the early hours transform these sites entirely — quiet, golden-lit and momentarily yours.
A night in a palace or heritage property
India's collection of converted palaces, havelis and colonial-era properties offers an accommodation experience that exists nowhere else in the world.
Time on the water, at the pace of the water
A private backwater cruise in Kerala is not an activity — it is an entirely different rhythm of travel, and one of the most quietly memorable experiences India offers.
An authentic Ayurvedic consultation
Even a single session with a Kerala physician — pulse diagnosis, individual assessment — offers insight into a 5,000-year-old tradition still practised as originally intended.
Private encounters with master artisans
Block-printing in Jaipur, coir-weaving in Kerala, miniature painting traditions passed through generations — craft that has never needed reviving because it never stopped.
A meal that arrives without a menu
Across India, some of the finest food is found not in restaurants but in homes — prepared with whatever the season and the host's family traditions dictate.
India is too large to be flattened into a single itinerary, and too rich to be rushed through in pursuit of one. We help you choose where to go deep — and then we go deep with you.
Every Black Dove journey begins with a conversation about what you are hoping to find — history, stillness, wellness, wildlife, or some combination that does not yet have a name. From there, we recommend the regions, the pace and the experiences that genuinely match what you are seeking — never a fixed package, never a group departure, and never more ground covered than the time allows.
When to visit India
India's scale means there is rarely a single "best time" — but for most of our journeys, the window below holds true.
The most comfortable months across the majority of the country — cool enough for Rajasthan's deserts and cities, dry enough for Kerala's highlands and coast. Our most recommended window for a first visit to India.
Hot across the north, but fewer visitors and excellent rates. Kerala's highlands remain pleasant. A good window for returning travellers or those prioritising value over peak comfort.
Kerala is at its most vivid during this period — lush, green and ideal for Ayurveda. Northern India is generally not recommended during the monsoon, but the south offers a genuinely different and beautiful experience.
Frequently asked
I have never been to India. Where should I start?
Rajasthan is the most natural starting point for most first-time visitors — visually spectacular, historically rich and well set up for international travellers, with the option to combine it with the Golden Triangle (Delhi and Agra). If you are seeking something gentler, Kerala can also work beautifully as a first visit. We will help you decide based on what draws you most.
What is the best time to visit India?
The best time depends on where you plan to travel. For much of North India, including Rajasthan and the Golden Triangle, the most pleasant season is October to March. Southern India, including Kerala, can be enjoyed throughout much of the year, with each season offering a different character. We will recommend the ideal travel period based on your chosen itinerary.
How much time should I allow for India?
For a single region — Rajasthan or Kerala alone — we recommend a minimum of seven to ten days. For a combined journey across two regions, allow fourteen to twenty-one days. India does not reward rushing, and the time invested is consistently what guests describe as the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one.
Can I combine multiple regions in one trip?
Yes — and many of our most memorable journeys do exactly this. Rajasthan and Kerala in particular complement each other: the grandeur of the north and the stillness of the south, each making the other more vivid. A journey of three weeks or more can comfortably hold both, along with an Ayurveda retreat as a closing chapter.
Can my itinerary be customised?
Absolutely. Every journey we create is tailor-made. Whether you would like to stay longer in a particular destination, include wildlife, add a wellness retreat, travel with family or celebrate a special occasion, we will design an itinerary that reflects your interests and travel style.
Is India safe and comfortable for luxury travellers?
Yes. India's luxury hospitality sector — particularly its heritage and palace hotels — is among the finest in the world, and private travel with experienced guides removes almost all of the friction that independent travellers sometimes encounter. We design every journey with your comfort, pace and preferences at the centre.
What kind of accommodation can I expect?
We carefully select accommodation that enhances your journey, from magnificent heritage palaces and boutique hotels to luxury resorts and wellness retreats. Every property is chosen for its character, comfort, service and sense of place, ensuring your stay is as memorable as the destinations themselves.
Will I have a private guide throughout my journey?
Most of our journeys include private guides in key destinations together with a dedicated driver throughout your tour. This provides flexibility, local insight and the freedom to travel at your own pace while enjoying a seamless experience.
