Ayurveda Retreats
Private retreats, personalised treatments and traditional Ayurvedic care designed around your individual needs — in the only part of the world where this ancient tradition has never left.
Not a spa treatment.
A way of understanding the body.
Ayurveda is one of the world's oldest living wellness traditions — developed in India more than 5,000 years ago and refined through an unbroken lineage of physicians, practitioners and scholars. The word itself means the science of life: ayur, life; veda, knowledge.
Ayurveda does not treat symptoms. It seeks to understand the person experiencing them — and restore the balance that illness, stress or time has disturbed.
Where modern medicine asks what is wrong, Ayurveda asks who you are. It begins with your constitution — your unique combination of energies, known as doshas — and builds an entirely individualised programme of treatments, nutrition, movement and daily rhythm around that understanding. No two Ayurvedic journeys are the same, because no two people are the same. This is personalised medicine in its oldest and, many would argue, most profound form.
Treatment pavilion · Kerala
A climate that has always supported healing
Kerala's tropical climate — warm, humid, rich in rainfall — creates the precise conditions that Ayurveda has depended upon for centuries. The same moisture that makes the landscape extraordinarily lush also opens the body's channels, making it receptive to treatment in ways that drier climates simply cannot replicate. Kerala's monsoon season, far from being an obstacle to travel, is traditionally considered the finest time for Ayurvedic treatment — the air cool, the pores open, the body at its most receptive.

Generations of unbroken practice
Kerala's Ayurvedic tradition is not a revival. It has never required one. Families of practitioners — known as Ashtavaidyas — have passed their knowledge from father to son for eight generations and more, preserving treatment methods, formulations and diagnostic principles that exist nowhere else in living form. When a Kerala physician examines you, they carry centuries of accumulated understanding. That is not something a certificate course can replicate — and it is the reason that Kerala remains Ayurveda's only authentic home.
Which retreat is right for you?
Ayurvedic retreats are not interchangeable. The right programme depends on your constitution, your goals, your available time and your current state of health. The cards below offer a starting point — we will help you refine the choice through conversation.
Rejuvenation Retreat
Designed for travellers who are not unwell, but depleted. Modern life creates a particular kind of tiredness that sleep alone cannot resolve. This retreat restores vitality through gentle cleansing therapies, nourishing treatments and a daily rhythm built around rest, movement and nourishment. You arrive exhausted. You leave yourself again.
Stress & Anxiety Programme
Stress is not simply a mental state — Ayurveda understands it as a whole-body condition that accumulates over time and expresses itself in sleep, digestion, mood and energy. This programme works on all of those levels: calming treatments for the nervous system, specific therapies for the mind, nutritional guidance and practices you can continue at home. It is not a holiday from your life — it is a recalibration of how you carry it.
Panchakarma Programme
Panchakarma is Ayurveda's most powerful therapeutic process — a systematic, physician-supervised cleansing of the body's tissues and channels. It is not comfortable in the way a spa is comfortable. It is demanding, deeply restorative and, for those who commit to it fully, genuinely transformative. This is Ayurveda at its most serious: preparation, treatment and careful rebuilding. Not for the impatient. Remarkable for everyone else.
Long-Stay Wellness Retreat
For those who arrive knowing they need more than a week can offer. A long-stay programme allows the physician to observe, adjust and deepen the treatment over time — working through layers of imbalance that shorter stays can only begin to address. Combined with the gradual surrender of the body's usual pace, this is the closest thing to a genuine reset that travel makes possible. Many guests describe it as the most significant experience of their adult lives.
A day in an Ayurveda retreat
One of the most common sources of hesitation about Ayurvedic retreats is simply not knowing what to expect. The following gives a sense of the daily rhythm — though every programme is individually designed and no two days are identical.
-
☀ Arrival
The initial consultation
Before any treatment begins, you meet with the Ayurvedic physician. This is a diagnostic conversation unlike any you have experienced in Western medicine — pulse diagnosis, observation, careful questions about sleep, digestion, temperament and history. From this, your constitution is assessed and your individual programme designed. Nothing begins before the physician understands who you are.Typically 60 – 90 minutes -
◑ Morning
Yoga and meditation
Most retreats begin the day with a private or small-group yoga session, adapted to your constitution and programme. This is not the vigorous yoga of a studio class — it is gentle, breath-led and designed to prepare the body for treatment. A brief meditation follows. The morning is quiet and intentional, establishing a daily rhythm quite different from ordinary life.Approximately 60 minutes -
⚗ Treatment
Daily Ayurvedic therapies
The heart of each day. Treatments vary by programme — Abhyanga (full-body warm oil massage), Shirodhara (steady oil poured on the forehead), Nasyam, Kizhi and dozens of other therapies, each with specific purposes and effects. All are performed by trained therapists under the physician's guidance, using formulations prepared on site from traditional recipes. You will not recognise most of what is done to you. You will notice how you feel afterwards.1.5 – 3 hours daily depending on programme -
🌿 Nutrition
Ayurvedic meals
Food is medicine in Ayurveda — not metaphorically but literally. Your meals are prescribed by the physician according to your constitution and treatment phase: specific grains, vegetables, spices, preparation methods and timing. This is not restrictive eating — it is intentional eating, and most guests find that the food, though unfamiliar at first, quickly becomes one of the retreat's quiet pleasures. Light, nourishing and remarkably satisfying.Three prescribed meals daily -
○ Evening
Rest, reflection and the physician's review
Evenings are unhurried. Most programmes include regular consultations with the physician — observations, adjustments, questions answered. Some retreats offer evening lectures on Ayurvedic philosophy, cooking demonstrations or walks through the medicinal herb garden. The general principle is simple: the evenings belong to you. Read, rest, walk, sit. This recovery time is part of the treatment, not a gap between treatments. -
↑ Departure
Your home programme
Good Ayurvedic retreats do not end at the gate. Before you leave, the physician prepares a personalised document: dietary guidance, daily practices, herbal formulations to continue and lifestyle recommendations tailored to your constitution and the treatment completed. The retreat is the beginning of something — not an episode to forget on the flight home.Included in all Black Dove retreat programmes
What a Black Dove retreat offers
Every retreat we arrange includes these core elements — though the specific form of each is shaped entirely around your programme.
Personal Ayurvedic consultation
An in-depth assessment by a qualified physician before treatment begins. This is not a welcome briefing — it is a diagnostic encounter that shapes everything that follows.
Individual treatment plan
A programme designed specifically for you — not selected from a menu, but written by the physician based on your constitution, your goals and your current state. Adjusted throughout your stay as the physician observes your progress.
Traditional therapies, daily
From Abhyanga to Shirodhara, Kizhi to Nasyam — each treatment performed by trained therapists using formulations prepared on site. The specific combination changes day by day as your programme progresses.
Yoga and meditation
Daily sessions adapted to your constitution and programme. Not performance yoga — therapeutic yoga, designed to work alongside your Ayurvedic treatments and deepen their effects.
Ayurvedic cuisine
Three meals daily, prescribed and prepared according to your individual nutritional needs. Simple, nourishing, specific to your constitution and treatment phase.
Home programme on departure
A personalised document from your physician: dietary guidance, daily practices and herbal recommendations to continue the work of the retreat after you return home.
Retreat centres we trust
We are selective. We visit every retreat centre we recommend. We assess the quality of the physicians, the integrity of the treatment methods, the standard of accommodation and the overall environment. The four centres below represent the best of what Kerala offers — each distinct, each exceptional in its own way.
Mekosha
Trivandrum · Cliff-edge retreat
A small, intimate property perched above the Arabian Sea, with a focus on authentic treatment over luxury amenity. Mekosha's physicians are among the most rigorous in Kerala — this is the right choice for those who want Ayurveda taken seriously in a setting of quiet elegance.
Authentic · Intimate · Medical-grade
Somatheeram
Kovalam · Beach property
One of Kerala's most established Ayurvedic centres, with decades of practice and a deep commitment to traditional methods. Somatheeram sits between beach and forest, offering both the comfort of an experienced institution and the restorative power of its setting.
Established · Traditional · Beach setting
The Leela Kovalam
Kovalam · Clifftop resort
For those who want world-class resort comfort alongside genuine Ayurvedic treatment, The Leela offers both without compromise. The setting — a clifftop above one of Kerala's finest beaches — is among the most beautiful of any retreat property in India.
Five-star · Beach views · Full resort
Fragrant Nature
Backwaters · Kollam
Set at the edge of the backwaters, Fragrant Nature offers a different kind of retreat — quieter, greener and more connected to the natural world than its coastal counterparts. An exceptional choice for guests combining Ayurveda with time on the water or in the forest.
Backwater setting · Nature-led · Peaceful
We visit our partner centres regularly and adjust our recommendations as standards evolve. If none of the above precisely fits your needs, we will find the centre that does.
Why Kerala, and not elsewhere
Authentic tradition
Kerala's Ayurvedic lineage is unbroken and undiluted. The knowledge passed through generations of Kerala physicians is simply unavailable anywhere else in the world at this level of integrity.
Qualified practitioners
Kerala's physicians complete years of formal study in addition to their inherited knowledge. Treatment here is medically supervised, individually prescribed and adjusted throughout your stay.
The natural environment
Climate, plants, air and water — all of Kerala's natural conditions support Ayurvedic treatment in ways that cannot be artificially replicated. The landscape is part of the medicine.
Holistic by design
Treatment, nutrition, movement, rest and philosophy are woven into a single, continuous programme. Nothing is an add-on. Everything works together, because Ayurveda has always understood the body as a whole.
Frequently asked
Do I need previous experience with Ayurveda?
Not at all. Many of our guests arrive with no prior knowledge of Ayurveda — only a sense that they need rest, balance or something they cannot find at home. The physician's initial consultation is designed precisely for this: it begins from where you are, not from any assumed knowledge. A good Ayurvedic retreat explains itself through the experience of receiving it.
How long should I stay?
It depends entirely on your goals. For general rest and renewal, five to seven days offers a meaningful experience. For stress and anxiety programmes, a week to ten days is more appropriate. For Panchakarma, which involves a full cleansing cycle, fourteen to twenty-one days is the minimum for genuine results. We will advise honestly on what your goals require — and we will never recommend more time than is genuinely useful.
What is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma is Ayurveda's most comprehensive therapeutic process — a physician-supervised programme of preparation, deep cleansing and post-treatment rebuilding. The word means five actions, referring to the five primary processes used to remove accumulated toxins from the body's tissues and channels. It is not a comfortable programme and it is not suited to every guest — but for those with the time, the commitment and the right constitution, it is unlike any other wellness experience available anywhere.
Is an Ayurveda retreat suitable alongside a cultural holiday?
Yes — and we design many Kerala journeys that hold both. The key is sequencing: Ayurveda works best when the body has settled, so we generally recommend placing the retreat in the middle or at the end of a longer journey. A few days in Fort Kochi, time in the Munnar highlands, then a retreat on the coast — or the reverse, ending with culture after the body has been restored. We will help you find the combination that makes sense for your length of stay and your priorities.
What should I avoid during an Ayurveda retreat?
Alcohol, vigorous exercise and heavy or processed food are generally discouraged throughout your stay. The physician will advise specifically. Most guests find that these adjustments happen naturally — the retreat rhythm, the treatments and the daily programme create their own momentum. By the third day, most people stop wanting what the physician has asked them to avoid.
