Muscat – Nizwa – Jabal Akhdar (Day Trip)

Depart from Muscat early in the morning and drive inland towards Nizwa, passing through changing landscapes of desert plains and mountain foothills. On arrival, begin your exploration at the iconic Nizwa Fort, where you can discover its massive circular tower, historic defense systems, and panoramic views over the oasis and old town. A short walk leads to the lively Nizwa Souq, offering a vibrant atmosphere filled with silver jewellery, traditional daggers, pottery, dates, and spices.

After the visit to Nizwa, continue towards the foothills of the Al Hajar Mountains to reach Birkat Al Mouz. Here, stroll through the atmospheric ruins of the old village and admire the ancient falaj irrigation system, an impressive example of Oman’s traditional water management and a UNESCO-recognized heritage feature.

From Birkat Al Mouz, the journey ascends into the cooler highlands of Jabal Akhdar by four-wheel-drive vehicle. The scenic climb offers dramatic views along winding mountain roads before reaching the Saiq Plateau, renowned for its terraced farms, traditional mountain villages, and sweeping vistas across the rugged landscape. After enjoying the tranquility and fresh mountain air, begin the descent and drive back to Muscat, arriving in the evening after a full day rich in culture, history, and natural beauty.
